Is Your Pool Making Your Guests Sick?

October 11, 2017

Improper Pool Maintenance Can Lead to Serious Illness

Your guests need to trust that when they dive into the crystal clear waters of your pool, they are safe as they splash down.

While many view pools as simple commodities, the science behind a clean and balanced pool is complicated. The perfect cocktail of chemicals used to create that safe aquatic paradise your guests enjoy must be properly maintained. Failure to do so could lead to infection and serious illness.

The chemicals that exist within pool waters serve a number of purposes. They keep the water clear and clean, but most importantly, they fight and kill germs and pool bacteria that could be harmful to swimmers. Most of these threats are placed in the water by the swimmers themselves.

Bacterial skin infections, urinary tract infections, nasal and eye infections are all common and contagious threats delivered unto your pool by those who are meant to enjoy it. One in five Americans also admits to urinating in public pools, according to a 2012 survey conducted by the Water Quality and Health Council (and that’s only the ones who admit to doing it!). This only adds to the presence of harmful germs in pools, further proving the need for a flawless chemical treatment of your water.

Failure to properly combat these external threats can lead to a variety of Recreational Water Illnesses, including a variety of skin, ear, respiratory, eye and gastrointestinal infections. Swallowing even one mouthful of contaminated water can leave a healthy swimmer sick for up to three weeks. Common symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and dehydration. Some extreme instances have even led to death.

When you trust inexperienced personnel to perform such a vital operation to the continued health and wellness of your guests, you are placing the lives of those who have trusted you in danger. This delicate operation must be undertaken by individuals with experience, reliability and knowledge.
