Why Has My Hotel Pool’s Water Turned Green?

Green pool water is no laughing matter. It can be difficult to get rid of and hazardous to both your guests and your reputation.

What Causes Pool Water to Turn Green?

It’s easy to unintentionally turn your pool’s water green but getting rid of green water is no easy task. There are three key factors that can lead to a green pool: algae, pollen and metals.

The presence of pool-based algae is brought about by improper chemical use. When chlorine levels are too low, algae will quickly begin to form, turning the water green. The water then becomes a festering breeding ground for harmful bacteria.

The presence of pollen can have a similar effect as it’s carried into the pool’s water by wind. Grains of pollen are often times too small to be picked up by a pool’s sand filter. Left untreated, pollen could gather on the liner and give the water a green or yellow coloring.

Oxidized metals such as copper can be introduced through source water, or by using inefficient cheap algaecides. Some metal pool components, such as copper heating elements can also create an acidity in the water that will turn it green.

What are the Dangers of Swimming in a Green Pool?

There are many hazards of green pool water. It is incredibly dangerous to swim in a pool contaminated with algae and bacteria for a number of reasons. First, the algae create a perfect breeding ground for mosquitos and other insects. This could lead to a potential outbreak of mosquito-borne illness such as West Nile or Zika Virus in your guests.

Some forms of algae can produce dangerous toxins and bacteria such as pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can cause infections in the respiratory tract, bloodstream, heart, ears, eyes, bones, GI tract, urinary tract and skin. Pseudomonal infections are complicated and can be life-threatening in some cases.

While pollen poses no health risk for swimmers, its yellow and green coloring is incredibly unattractive and unappealing. Many hotels suffering from pollen discoloration in their pool water could see refund requests and plummeting guest satisfaction scores.

Metals, if left untreated, can stain the finish of your hotel pool, creating a far more costly issue. Furthermore, excessive metals have an unfortunate side effect on some guests, particularly those with blonde hair. Namely the ability to change the color of a person’s hair from blonde to green.
